Can humans and super-intelligent machines co-exist? I’m Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update.
As self-aware supercomputers reproduce and evolve, the US military turns to a small army of citizen computer gamers to save mankind. That’s not science fiction; it’s today. The Office of Naval Research has launched an online game in which teams of regular people respond to something called The Singularity: Navy Director of Innovation Garth Jensen says that’s when computers become self-aware and able to reproduce.
GARTH JENSEN (Naval Surface Warfare Center):
We don’t know what happens at the point. We think we have some clues. But we’re asking people to help the Navy think through what is the place of humans and how to humans and machines interact in a productive positive way going forward after that singularity occurs.
