BOB HIRSHON (host):
Hubble’s 25th anniversary. I’m Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update.
The Hubble Space Telescope has been taking high-resolution images of the universe for 25 years now. Daniel Clery of Science magazine reflects on Hubble’s many discoveries.
DANIEL CLERY (Science Magazine):
It can detect some of the very first galaxies from the early universe; so it’s the first time we’ve been able to see what they look like. And it’s demonstrated that most galaxies out there have a supermassive black hole at their heart, so that’s something we didn’t know before.
HIRSHON:
The telescope has also led to a better understanding of the age of our universe and the rate at which it is expanding. And, it took the first snapshots of an exoplanet.
CLERY:
You always find things you’re not expecting, and that’s been one of the joys of Hubble, it’s discovered things that weren’t even dreamt of when it was built.
HIRSHON:
I’m Bob Hirshon, for AAAS, the science society.
